Piezoelectric Components in Different Shapes

Piezoceramic components, such as plates, disks or rings, convert mechanical signals, such as force, pressure, strain or acceleration, into electrical voltage, or, vice versa, an electrical voltage into mechanical motion or oscillations. The typical resonant frequencies are between 200 kHz and 10 MHz. The piezo elements are frequently used for generating ultrasonic oscillations, for example, in sensors or for high-power ultrasonic applications.

The shapes and dimensions of the piezo components can be selected within the limits determined by the tools, although the dimensions depend on each other. The minimum dimensions are determined by physical and technological limits. The thickness or wall thickness, for example, is limited by the mechanical strength of the ceramic during machining. In the polarization direction, the dimension is at most 30 mm.  

PI Ceramic integrates piezo ceramics into the customer’s product. This includes both the electrical contacting of the elements according to customer requirements and the mounting of components provided by the customer, and the gluing or the casting of the piezo ceramics. Piezo elements and components can also be delivered in large quantities at very short notice.

Tube actuators can be provided with multi-segmented electrodes, to influence the oscillation characteristics. With wrap-around electrodes, electrical contacting can be established at a favorable position within the mechanical assembly.

PI Piezo Materials

Depending on the frequency range, operating temperature and application, different materials can be used. PI Ceramic develops all piezoceramics in-house and can therefore use the right material for every application.

PI Slides

On request, PI Ceramic modifies the electrode material in accordance with your application.  You can select from different noble metals or alloys.  The electrode shapes are also flexibly selectable. Easier access to the electrical connections is provided by wrap-around contacts. Segmented electrodes have an influence on the expansion behavior of the ceramic element.

Electrical Connections

PI Ceramic performs the soldering of the stranded wire according to the customer's requirement. The standard length of the stranded wires is 100 mm, and the connectors are freely selectable.

PI Assembling Technology

PI Ceramic integrates piezo ceramics into the customer’s product. This includes both the electrical contacting of the elements according to customer requirements and the mounting of components provided by the customer, and the gluing or the casting of the piezo ceramics.

PI Vacuum

Piezo components can be equipped for UHV environments of up to 10-9 mbar. In this case, they can be heated to more than 100 °C and provided on request with suitable stranded wires. For operation in magnetic fields, the metals used are selected to fit the electrical contact.

Labeling of the Polarity

The surface of the electrode which is at the positive potential during polarization is marked with a dot or a cross.

Alternatively and particularly for thin-film electrodes, the direction of polarization is marked by coloring the electrode material: A reddish color indicates the electrode which was at the positive potential during the polarization.

Soldering

Soldering Instructions for Users

All our metallizations can be soldered in conformance with >> RoHS. We recommend the use of a solder with the composition Sn 95.5. Ag3.8. Cu 0.7. If the piezoceramic element is heated throughout above the Curie temperature, the material is depolarized, and there is thus a loss of, or reduction in, the piezoelectric parameters.

This can be prevented by adhering to the following conditions under all circumstances when soldering: 

  • All soldered contacts must be point contacts.
  • The soldering times must be as shortas possible (≤3 sec).
  • The specific soldering temperature must not be exceeded.
